A man accused of killing his brother and trying to kill his mother has reluctantly appeared in court.
Shaun Sanderson, 32, has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder following the death of a 29-year-old Rileigh Sanderson and the serious injury of Catherine Sanderson, 65.
It’s understood the alleged victims are the brother and mother of the accused.
Mr Sanderson was arrested on Gilbert Rd in the Melbourne suburb of Preston shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday.
His arrest came after a significant manhunt.
Police and emergency services were called to Willoughby St, Reservoir, in Melbourne’s north on Wednesday morning, with police initially believing Mr Sanderson to be inside.
Mr Sanderson’s mother was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital following the incident, and her condition remains serious but not life-threatening.
RMH told NCA NewsWire on Thursday the patient was in a stable condition.
In a filing hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, magistrate Olivia Trumble told Mr Sanderson’s lawyer the accused man needed to attend court.
“He needs to come up,” Ms Trumble said.
“It’s best it’s done willingly,” she said.
A lawyer told the court that Mr Sanderson was unwilling to attend due to the significant public interest his alleged crimes has attracted.
After a few minutes, Mr Sanderson was brought into the courtroom.
No application for bail was made, and the accused was remanded in custody to July 13.
